The fact is that Mr. Chang simply takes an honest look at Capitalism and details many of its flaws that cannot be mitigated from Capitalism proper. He shows many of the defects that many on the Right choose to ignore.

His honest discussion should be used for those who understand that only the government can be the damping effect that Capitalism requires to prevent it from falling under its own weight.

This is a must read for those discussing policy with their knowledgeable neighbors.

Like most Americans, Steve Ettlinger eats processed foods. And, like most consumers, he often reads the ingredients label—without a clue as to what most of it means. So, when his young daughter asked, “Daddy, what’s polysorbate 60?” while eating ice cream bars at the beach on a hot summer day, he was at a loss—and determined to find out.

In this fascinating exploration into the curious world of packaged foods, Twinkie, Deconstructed takes us from phosphate mines in Idaho to corn fields in Iowa, from gypsum mines in Oklahoma to oil fields in China, to demystify some of America’s most common processed food ingredients—where they come from, how they are made, how they are used—and why. Beginning at the source (hint: they’re often more closely linked to rocks and petroleum than any of the four food groups), Ettlinger reveals how each Twinkie ingredient goes through the process of being crushed, baked, fermented, refined, and/or reacted into a totally unrecognizable goo or powder with a strange name—all for the sake of creating a simple snack cake.

An insightful, entertaining exploration of modern food industry, if you’ve ever wondered what you’re eating when you consume foods containing mono and diglycerides or calcium sulfate (the latter, a food-grade equivalent of plaster of Paris), this book is for you.

I was at one of my Democratic meetings at the Harris County Democratic Headquarters discussing messaging. One of the members of the messaging team told me that I needed to read the book “The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation” by Drew Westen. I immediately pulled out my Motorola Xoom and purchased it.

This was one of the most insightful reads I had. The book is a blueprint not only for the Democratic Party but for anyone who has to truthfully convince other people to support policies that are best for them. In our current discourse I am amazed at how many people are easily convinced by those on the right to support policies that negatively affect them.

Based on the analysis provided by Drew Westin, it is all about the narrative and how it is expressed relative to those who one is attempting to convince. He provides actual examples from successful Democrats and unsuccessful Democrats as well as from Republicans that were successful in winning even as their policies did damage to Americans.

This book is a must read for both Democrats and Republicans. Its analytic approach to the human psyche in an easy to read fashion is invaluable.

PDF of Article

I wrote this article to detail the amazing experience I had in Washington DC as well as to implore my fellow Americans to get active lest we lose this democracy to a well organized Plutocracy that has been very effective in misleading a plurality of Americans. There is a lot happening around the country that we must all be attuned to.

The Occupy Wall Street movement seem to be coalescing into a real grass roots movement. It has spread nation wide. My two young co-host on “Politics Done Right” Andy Meyer and Evan Carroll are part of the Occupy Houston organizing team. I will be back in Washington for the Enough Is Enough Citizens Intervention Rally at the end of the month. I hope some of you reading this will consider flying up there as well. Just imagine instead of one person going to Ted Poe’s office in DC we get 20 or 30 directly from the community. Use some of those frequent flier miles for a good cause.

Whether you go to the rally in DC or your go downtown to the Occupy Houston camp, do something. (BTW, take them some food or donate online to keep them stocked. They are the current front line.) If you know and feel that something needs to be done but you can’t figure out how you can make a difference, drop me an email by clicking on the email button on the top of the site or message me on Facebook. If you do the Twitter thing, follow me. I have quite a few suggestions. Remember we can all make a difference and you want to be on the right side of history.
